In “Beautiful Lies: The Art of the Deep Fake<\/a>,” an essay in the Los Angeles Review of Books<\/em>, I examine the rise and ramifications of deep fakes through a review of two books, photographer \u00a0Jonas Bendiksen<\/a>‘s The Book of Veles<\/em> and mathematician Noah Giansiracusa<\/a>‘s How Algorithms Create and Prevent Fake News<\/em>. As Bendiksen’s work<\/a> shows, deep-fake technology gives artists a new tool for probing reality. As for the rest of us, the technology promises to turn reality into art.<\/p>\n

Here’s a bit from the essay:<\/p>\n

The spread of ever more realistic deep fakes will make it even more likely that people will be taken in by fake news and other lies. The havoc of the last few years is probably just the first act of a long misinformation crisis. Eventually, though, we\u2019ll all begin to take deep fakes for granted. We\u2019ll come to take it as a given that we can\u2019t believe our eyes. At that point, deep fakes will start to have a very different and even more disorienting effect. They\u2019ll amplify not our gullibility but our skepticism. As we lose trust in the information we receive, we\u2019ll begin, in Giansiracusa\u2019s words, to \u201cdoubt reality itself.\u201d We\u2019ll go from a world where our bias was to take everything as evidence \u2014 the world Susan Sontag described in On Photography<\/em> \u2014 to one where our bias is to take nothing as evidence.<\/p>\n

The question is, what happens to \u201cthe truth\u201d \u2014 the quotation marks seem mandatory now \u2014 when all evidence is suspect?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
