People\u00a0consult their\u00a0phones almost three times more frequently than they\u00a0think they\u00a0do. Yesterday, Pew came out with the results of a new survey\u00a0that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2015\/12\/08\/one-fifth-of-americans-report-going-online-almost-constantly\/\">revealed<\/a> that more than a fifth of Americans, and more than a third of young Americans, report being\u00a0online &#8220;almost constantly.&#8221; Given people&#8217;s\u00a0tendency to underreport gadget use, &#8220;almost constantly&#8221; means &#8220;constantly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2015\/12\/08\/one-fifth-of-americans-report-going-online-almost-constantly\/ft_15-12-4-online-constantly\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pewresearch.org\/files\/2015\/12\/FT_15.12.4.online.constantly.png?resize=310%2C543\" alt=\"One-in-five Americans \u2013 and 36% of 18- to 29-year-olds \u2013 go online \u2018almost constantly\u2019\" width=\"310\" height=\"543\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Media seeks sovereignty over all experience, and its goal would seem to be in reach.\u00a0&#8220;Ever in flux and process, reality cannot be approached directly,&#8221; wrote Siegfried Giedion in his 1948 masterpiece <em>Mechanization Takes Command<\/em>. &#8220;Reality is too vast, and direct means fail. Suitable tools are needed, as in the raising of an obelisk.
