{"id":3966,"date":"2013-11-07T14:39:56","date_gmt":"2013-11-07T21:39:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.roughtype.com\/?p=3966"},"modified":"2013-11-07T19:39:46","modified_gmt":"2013-11-08T02:39:46","slug":"peak-ebook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.roughtype.com\/?p=3966","title":{"rendered":"Peak ebook?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been documenting the recent, surprisingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roughtype.com\/?p=2296\">sharp<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roughtype.com\/?p=3590\">decline<\/a> in ebook sales growth. The falloff has continued through the first half of this year, with ebooks now showing clear signs of &#8220;stagnating&#8221; at about 25 percent of the overall U.S. book market, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalbookworld.com\/2013\/study-ebook-growth-stagnating-in-2013\/\">according<\/a> to <em>Digital Book World:<\/em>\u00a0&#8220;Once thought destined to reach 50% or 80% of all book buying and reading in the U.S., ebooks have stalled out on their way up to higher altitude.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>DBW bases that conclusion on a new study by the Book Industry Study Group, a publishing trade association, which uses data from Nielsen Book Research. The study shows that &#8220;for the past year or so, the share of all new ebooks sold \u2014 both in units and dollars \u2014 has been flat at about 30% and just under 15%, respectively.&#8221; A DBW chart drawn from the Nielsen numbers indicates that e-books actually lost some market share during the second quarter of this year (a trend also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-digital-reader.com\/2013\/09\/19\/ebook-sales-almost-4-first-half-2013-aap-reports\/#.UnwE_qWB9iw\">seen<\/a> in recent sales reports from the Association of American Publishers):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.roughtype.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/ebook-share-of-new-books-sold.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3967\" alt=\"ebook-share-of-new-books-sold\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.roughtype.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/ebook-share-of-new-books-sold.jpg?resize=500%2C289&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"500\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.roughtype.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/ebook-share-of-new-books-sold.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.roughtype.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/ebook-share-of-new-books-sold.jpg?resize=300%2C173&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Nielsen data also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bisg.org\/news-5-861-now-available-report-two-of-consumer-attitudes-toward-e-book-reading-volume-4.php\">reveals<\/a> &#8220;a slow decline in the number of people who exclusively buy e-books.&#8221; Comments Nielsen&#8217;s Jo Henry:\u00a0&#8220;It is clear from four annual research surveys that e-books are in the later stages of the innovation curve and have settled into reasonably predictable consumption patterns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Maybe this is just an anomaly and ebooks will eventually gain a second wind and start taking more share from printed books.
