We have seen data centers in semitrailers, data centers in caves, data centers in Siberia, data centers in the Las Vegas desert, and data centers that <a href=\"http:\/\/appft1.uspto.gov\/netacgi\/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&#038;Sect2=HITOFF&#038;d=PG01&#038;p=1&#038;u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.html&#038;r=1&#038;f=G&#038;l=50&#038;s1=%2220080209234%22.PGNR.&#038;OS=DN\/20080209234&#038;RS=DN\/20080209234\">float<\/a> in the middle of the ocean. Today we have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/archives\/2008\/09\/22\/new-from-microsoft-data-centers-in-tents\/\">word<\/a>, via Data Center Knowledge, that Microsoft has been testing data centers in tents. (They&#8217;re calling it <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/the_power_of_software\/archive\/2008\/09\/19\/intense-computing-or-in-tents-computing.aspx\">In Tents Computing<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s next? Here&#8217;s my prediction of the ten top data center innovations we&#8217;ll see over the course of the next year:<\/p>\n<p>1. Data centers in blimps<\/p>\n<p>2. Data centers in shoes<\/p>\n<p>3. Data centers in termite nests<\/p>\n<p>4. Data centers implanted under the skin of people&#8217;s forearms<\/p>\n<p>5. Data centers in canoes<\/p>\n<p>6. Data centers constructed entirely of post-consumer waste<\/p>\n<p>7. Data centers rolled in seaweed like maki<\/p>\n<p>8. Data centers worn by Japanese schoolgirls<\/p>\n<p>9. Data centers in trees<\/p>\n<p>10. Data centers as figments of the imagination<\/p>\n<p>Sun Microsystems reportedly has a working prototype of a data center in a kangaroo&#8217;s pouch, but that&#8217;s unconfirmed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recent months have brought a burst of innovation in data centers.
